The Field of Fortune is the planting of all our dreams for the forthcoming year. Promises of wealth, good health and long lasting relations are held inside tiny sweet fortune cookies and unfired clay cookies. These cookies are sewn into the field, they break open releasing their ambitions and grow till harvest.
The Field of Fortune performance was based on the painting, The Sewer by Vincent van Gogh and was held on the Vernal Equinox at Fieldworks outside Perth, Ontario. (www.fieldworkproject.com)
The first day of spring with the last of winters snow floating in the air, O’Brien dressed as a peasant and sewed the field. Born under the sign of Virgo (the harvest goddess), O’Brien used her constellation to guide the sewing in hopes to bring about a good harvest.
As with all great performances and a day of labour a great celebration was had with a warm cup of wonton soup.
